Frequently asked questions

Got questions?
We've got answers.

Everything you need to know about hiring a skip bin in Auckland.

01 Booking & delivery

How quickly can you deliver a skip bin?

We offer same-day delivery across Auckland whenever possible. Book before 11am and there's a good chance we'll have a bin to you that afternoon. For guaranteed timing, book 24 hours in advance.

How do I book a skip bin?

Fastest way is right here on the website โ€” use our booking form and you'll see live pricing as you select. Prefer to talk to a human? Just call us on 021 106 9735.

What areas of Auckland do you cover?

We deliver across the entire Auckland region โ€” Auckland Central, East, West and South Auckland. If you're not sure whether you're in our zone, give us a quick call.

Do I need to be home for delivery?

Not usually. As long as we know where to put the bin and have clear access, you don't need to be there. Just leave delivery instructions in the booking notes.

What if no one is home when the bin is delivered?

Provide detailed instructions for bin placement when ordering. Please remember to think about safety when siting your bin. Look for any obstacles that may restrict the truck's access such as power lines, phone lines, tree branches, etc. Clear instructions save time and prevent problems.

Where can a skip bin be placed?

You can always put a skip within your own property, subject to space requirements. There must be no obstacles obstructing movement of the truck, lifting gear (gantry) or bins. It is the customer's responsibility to choose a suitable spot to place the bin.

Auckland Skip Bins does not accept any responsibility for damage caused to services whether underground or overhead. Our skip trucks offload a skip from the rear using two parallel bars (gantry).

Please let us know ahead of time about any:

  • Dogs on the property
  • Steep drops or slopes
  • Overhead wires or cables
  • Other access hazards

We are not responsible for any damage due to no information given prior, or lack of warnings regarding driveway hazards that may put the driver at risk.

Can skip bins be placed on the road or verge?

If you need to put the skip on the road or grass verge, different rules apply. It is the customer's responsibility to get authorisation from Auckland Council if you wish to have the bin placed on the road or grass verge.

Be aware โ€” locals are very good at helping you fill your bin at your cost. It's very common, and anything that goes in the bin is at your responsibility and cost.

What happens if the skip is picked up before it's full?

When you hire a skip bin, you specify the collection date and it will be collected on that date unless you subsequently request otherwise. If a driver finds a skip substantially empty, he will make attempts to have the customer contacted, but ultimately has the discretion to remove the skip if he sees fit.

If the driver is turned away on arrival, the customer will be responsible for payment of any callout fee incurred for the additional trip.

What if the bin can't be delivered or is turned away?

If the skip cannot be delivered for any reason other than the fault of Auckland Skip Bins, our local supplier, or the driver, the customer will be liable for any callout fees incurred. You'll be entitled to either a refund of the balance, or for the balance to be credited towards the hire of a different skip.

How much space do I need for the bin?

For our smallest 3mยณ bin, you'll need about 3m ร— 1.5m of flat, accessible ground. Bigger bins need more space. The truck also needs room to manoeuvre โ€” we can advise when you book.

02 Bins & pricing

What size bin do I need?

Rough guide:

  • 3mยณ โ€” small home cleanouts, garage tidy, moving house
  • 6mยณ โ€” renovation debris, full house declutter, larger clears
  • 9mยณ โ€” major builds, big demolition jobs

Not sure? Call us with a quick description of the job and we'll point you to the right one.

Is GST included in your prices?

Yes โ€” every price shown on our booking form is GST-inclusive. The number you see is the number you pay.

Are there any hidden fees?

No hidden fees. Our quoted price covers delivery, the standard hire period and pickup. However, additional charges apply in these specific situations, all clearly stated up front:

  • Extra hire days โ€” $20 per day + GST if you keep the bin longer than booked
  • Overweight fee โ€” $0.50 per kg + GST for anything over the stated weight limit
  • Credit / debit card surcharge โ€” 1.5% (avoid by using bank transfer or cash)
  • Callout fee โ€” if the driver is turned away or can't access the site

We'll always contact you before charging any additional fee. See our terms and conditions for the full detail.

How long can I keep the bin?

Standard hire periods are 3 or 7 days for general and green waste. Hard fill has a 5-day hire period. Need it longer? Just give us a call โ€” we can usually arrange an extension for a small additional charge.

What's the weight limit?

General waste weight limits:

  • 3mยณ โ€” 500kg
  • 6mยณ โ€” 1000kg
  • 9mยณ โ€” 1500kg

Hard fill in our 3mยณ bin has no weight limit.

03 What goes in the bin

What can I put in the bin?

Depends on the waste type:

  • General waste โ€” most household and renovation rubbish
  • Green & light waste โ€” garden trimmings, light household items
  • Hard fill โ€” concrete, bricks, tiles, soil, sand

Keep your waste types separate โ€” mixing them attracts extra charges at the transfer station.

What CAN'T I put in the bin?

The following are not allowed in any of our skip bins:

  • Asbestos or asbestos-containing materials
  • Hazardous chemicals, paints, solvents
  • Gas bottles, fire extinguishers, aerosols
  • Tyres
  • Car batteries, household batteries
  • Food waste / organic kitchen waste
  • Electronic waste (e-waste)
  • Medical waste
  • Liquids of any kind

If you're unsure about something, just ask.

Can I put asbestos in a skip?

Asbestos must NOT be put in any skip hired from Auckland Skip Bins or its partnership companies.

Asbestos can be found in many materials in houses built up until the late 1980s. If in doubt as to whether or not a material might contain asbestos, please consult an expert before placing it in a skip.

If asbestos is found in a skip prior to removal from a customer's property, the skip will not be removed until it has been properly dealt with.

If asbestos is found in the skip after it has been tipped, either at landfill or at a transfer station, high decontamination costs and possibly heavy penalties may be imposed. The customer will be responsible for the payment of all costs immediately.

What happens if passers-by overload the skip or put prohibited materials in it?

As part of the booking terms and conditions, you as the customer are in possession of the skip and are responsible for what goes in it. Therefore, you will be responsible for any costs arising if anyone puts something in the skip that is not allowed or overloads it.

The same applies if you're agreeing with a neighbour and allowing them to put items in your bin. You're responsible for the weight, and we suggest costs be shared amongst yourselves โ€” especially in the common case of an overweight/excess charge that we become aware of once tipped.

Can I overfill the bin?

No โ€” bins must be filled level with the top, not heaped. Overfilled bins are unsafe to transport and we may not be able to collect them, or may need to charge an extra fee.

04 Payment & admin

How do I pay?

Two options: cash on delivery, or bank transfer (we'll send account details after you book). Pick your preference on the booking form.

Do you provide invoices?

Yes โ€” every booking gets a tax invoice with GST clearly itemised. Just let us know if you need it sent to a specific email.

What's your cancellation policy?

Cancel any time before the bin is delivered, no charge. Once a bin is on its way or delivered, cancellation fees may apply. See our terms and conditions for full details.
